Last November 20, our Miami office joined a clean-up activity with kayaks from Oleta River State Park - Florida's largest urban park, with 1,043-acres of green space set against Biscayne Bay - to Sandspur Island.
Our team members from the Sonnedix Miami office, fully equipped with protective gear, enjoyed a sunny day of kayaking while helping remove debris from the mangroves and shoreline of the area.
We also had the chance to learn about the immense importance of preserving Mangrove forests:
- They bury and store carbon at a much greater rate than tropical forests like the Amazon rainforest. They are essential to fighting climate change.
- They contribute to maintaining water quality by filtering and trapping sediments, heavy metals, and other pollutants, preventing contamination of downstream waterways and protecting sensitive habitats like coral reefs and seagrass beds below.
- They act as a first-line defense for some coastal communities, creating natural barriers that help against flooding, hurricanes, etc.
- Their roots and branches provide important shelter, nesting and nursery areas for many species, both above and under the water.
