PICA, CHILE - The Chilean Energy Minister, Juan Carlos Jobet, visited the 171MW solar PV plant, Sonnedix Atacama Solar, located in the Pica district in the Atacama Desert in Chile. Developed by the global solar independent power producer Sonnedix, it is the company’s largest project to date.

“We are visiting the Sonnedix Atacama Solar plant in Pica, which has an extension of 440 hectares of photovoltaic panels that will provide clean, renewable and cost effective energy for Chilean homes. This project shows the enormous potential that the Tarapacá Region has in the generation of renewable energy,” said Jobet.

Sergio Del Campo, Sonnedix Director of Operations in Chile, said: “Once completed, Sonnedix Atacama Solar will generate approximately 470GWh of clean electricity annually and avoid the emission of around 200,000 metric tons of CO2 per year compared with thermal generation. Also, we are working in partnership with the local community to support the local economy, provide employment opportunities and to protect the environment.”

The plant’s construction began in August 2019 and it is expected to start commercial operation during 2020. Among the largest solar power projects in Chile, this facility will generate enough electricity for more than 100,000 homes when operational.

With an investment of US$180 million (EUR 160 million), Sonnedix Atacama Solar is creating around 400 direct jobs during the construction phase, providing opportunities for the residents of the Tamarugal province in the northern Chilean region of Tarapacá.
