Sonnedix in South Africa
South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP) program, designed to help the country meet its national renewable energy targets while encouraging foreign investment and developing socio-economic and environmentally sustainable growth, selected Sonnedix’s 86MW large-scale solar photovoltaic power project plan in October 2013. Construction on Mulilo Sonnedix Prieska PV (Prieska) began on the Northern Cape in the first quarter of 2015 and was completed in July 2016.
Prieska’s successful development is a considerable milestone for Sonnedix, as it confirmed the company’s growth strategy and the added value of Sonnedix in new markets where clean renewable electricity is both in high demand and cost effective, compared to conventional sources of power. Furthermore, it displayed Sonnedix’s ability to execute large-scale projects on time and on budget.
Renewable energy is a crucial source of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country, with foreign investment into the REIPPP program equivalent to 86% of the total FDI attracted in South Africa in 2014, and Sonnedix is proud to have played its role in reaffirming the future of renewables in Africa.
