  • The agreement entails the annual purchase of 104GWh of Guarantees of Origin over the next decade, sourced from the Sonnedix Covatillas solar PV complex.

Madrid, Spain – Sonnedix, a global renewable energy company with more than 11.6GW of capacity, has signed an agreement with VW Kraftwerk GmbH, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, for the supply of Guarantees of Origin (GOs) from renewable electricity generated in Spain. This agreement will support the automotive group in decarbonising its European operations.

These renewable certificates will be sourced from the Sonnedix Covatillas photovoltaic complex - comprising the Covatillas 1, 5, and 6 plants - located in the municipalities of Minglanilla, Graja de Iniesta, and Puebla del Salvador (Cuenca). The 150MW complex came online in June, and is among Sonnedix’s most significant solar developments in the Iberian region.

104 GWh OF CERTIFIED ENERGY OVER 10 YEARS

Under the agreement, Sonnedix will deliver 104GWh of renewable energy certificates per year for a period of 10 years. This volume is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 25,000 households and represents a reduction of around 37,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions.

This contract marks Sonnedix’s first long-term Guarantees of Origin (GOs) sales agreement, reinforcing its position as a strategic partner for large corporations pursuing decarbonisation. It follows other major agreements, including a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Renfe to supply 420GWh of renewable energy annually for rail operations.

Axel Thiemann, CEO of Sonnedix, states:

“Global companies need reliable, certified renewable solutions that align with their climate commitments. This agreement with VW Kraftwerk GmbH demonstrates our ability to design a range of energy products and services for our clients, from tailored energy contracts to the sale of GOs, providing immediate value and contributing to the decarbonisation of key sectors, such as the automotive industry.”

Gerson González, Managing Director of Sonnedix Spain, adds:

“Spain has become a strategic hub for renewable supply in Europe, and projects like Covatillas are a clear example. At Sonnedix, we put the customer at the center. That is why we are proud to support Volkswagen in its environmental roadmap and to make renewable energy generated in our country available to the European industry.”

COVATILLAS: ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY WITH LOCAL IMPACT

Inaugurated in June 2025, the Sonnedix Covatillas complex incorporates 274,260 bifacial modules, 3,680 2V trackers, and an on-site 150 MVA substation. The facility generates an annual average of 298,500MWh - enough to power 71,000 households - and avoids more than 108,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. Its construction created more than 200 direct jobs, with strong local engagement, and includes advanced biodiversity protection measures.
