  • Sonnedix Lousada joins the portfolio of projects comprising Douro, Bustelo, and Lordelo, bringing the company’s total operational capacity in Portugal to over 300 MW.

Madrid – Sonnedix, a global renewable energy company with more than 4 GW in operation worldwide, announces the start of operations for Sonnedix Lousada (CSF Paredes), its 36.8 MW photovoltaic solar plant located in the municipality of Paredes, Porto district, Portugal.

With Lousada entering operations in mid-December, Sonnedix surpasses 300 MW of operational capacity in Portugal, strengthening its presence in a market that has matured significantly since its arrival in 2022 and stands out for its dynamism and high growth potential. This new project adds to the Douro (150 MW), Bustelo (23.8 MW), and Lordelo (14.7 MW) plants, inaugurated during the first half of 2025.

From its early stages, the Lousada project was developed with a strong commitment to local integration and community collaboration. Sonnedix has maintained an ongoing dialogue with local authorities and neighbours to adapt the plant to its landscape and address identified local needs. A site integration plan, supported by a one-million-euro investment, will be implemented to enhance environmental conservation and promote sustainable development through measures designed to increase the area’s ecological and social value. The plant will produce clean energy equivalent to the annual consumption of more than 18,300 households, avoiding the emission of 19,600 tonnes of CO₂e per year.

COMMITMENT TO HYBRIDIZATION AND STORAGE: BESS IN 2026

Sonnedix is evolving its portfolio towards hybrid models that combine solar and wind generation with battery energy storage systems (BESS), enabling the company to offer energy trading products that better align with customer demand profiles.

Sonnedix’s first hybrid projects in Portugal will begin operations in 2026, marking a milestone in the evolution of its portfolio.

Axel Thiemann, CEO of Sonnedix, stated:

“The start of operations of Sonnedix Lousada represents another step forward in consolidating our growth in Portugal. 2025 has been a decisive year for our portfolio in the country, and this project demonstrates our capability to build and operate both efficiently and sustainably. We will continue advancing hybrid solutions that provide real flexibility to the energy system.”

Beatriz Llorente, Head of Growth Iberia, added:

“Portugal has become a key pillar of our strategy in Europe. With Lousada now in operation, we strengthen a portfolio that already exceeds 700 MW of total capacity in the country and move towards a new generation of hybrid projects, with the first batteries expected to start operations in 2026. We appreciate the authorities’ support and remain firmly committed to collaboration as we continue to grow and establish ourselves as a long-term reference in the Portuguese market.”
