Lisbon, Portugal – Sonnedix, a leading renewable energy producer with over 4 GW of global operating capacity, is pleased to inaugurate its largest European plant to date – Project Douro, located in the municipality of Tarouca, Viseu district in northern Portugal.
With an installed capacity of 150 MW, Douro is exemplary of the size and scale of the projects Sonnedix develops. Sonnedix is actively working alongside the local authorities on the project’s hybridisation with BESS and wind, thanks to its connection point in Valdigem substation. This is aligned with the Company’s focus on providing bespoke, tailored renewable energy solutions to its customers.
Douro furthers the company’s strong track record in securing major PPAs, with the previously announced signing of a 10 year pay-as produced power purchase agreement (PPA) with digital infrastructure company Equinix.
The inauguration comes at a time of rapid expansion for the Company in Iberia. A relatively new entrant to Portugal, Sonnedix has quickly expanded its footprint, developing over 400 MW of controlled capacity. With a further 200 MW under construction in the country, the Company is leveraging its expertise and synergies across Iberia, where it has a total of 1.7 GW, to double its operating capacity in Portugal by the end of the year.
Sonnedix’s Executive Chairman, Carlos Guinand, said:“Douro is our biggest plant built in Europe, within a high-growth market for Sonnedix, cementing Portugal as a key part of our European growth strategy. In less than two years, we’ve brought Douro online, showing we can deliver quickly and at scale. Our partnership with Equinix, the world’s digital infrastructure company, signals continued appetite for renewable energy, particularly in powering the new digital economy and data centres. Projects like this, especially with strong hybridisation potential, are key to ensuring a resilient supply of clean energy to power European tech, transport, and other energy-intensive sectors.”
Head of Growth, Iberia, Beatriz Llorente Blanco said:“This project marks a significant step forward in Sonnedix’s growing presence in Portugal. It’s the result of strong collaboration with local partners and authorities, and reflects our long-term commitment to developing, owning, and operating world-class renewable energy projects. We have a world-class team on the ground in Portugal and look forward to many future announcements like this one.”
Carlos Paulino, Equinix Managing Director in Portugal, said:"We at Equinix are proud to be a part of supporting the largest European project to date in the Douro region. Project Douro represents a landmark achievement, not just for Equinix but for Portugal’s renewable energy sector as a whole. With its impressive scale and impact, this solar project reinforces the country’s commitment to clean energy while meeting the growing demand for sustainable digital infrastructure. Through our partnership with Sonnedix, we are ensuring that Equinix plays a role at the heart of supporting renewable energy solutions - supporting both Portugal’s tech-driven future and our decarbonisation efforts.”
The inauguration ceremony took place in Villa Cha da Beira, Portugal, and was attended by local and regional government representatives, along with members of Sonnedix’s management team. Valdemar Pereira, President of Tarouca Municipality, Paula Pinto, Head of Commercial Operations at REN (Portugal’s national electricity transmission system operator), and Carlos Paulino (Managing Director of Equinix, Portugal) joined Sonnedix’s leadership team Carlos Guinand, Executive Chairman, Juan Fernandez, Chief Operating Officer, and Gregorio Morales, Chief Commercial Officer, in cutting the ribbon, officially inaugurating the project.
